5 Plumbing Jobs You Can Learn to Do Yourself

Published 11 October 2026 · 3 min read

Plumbing has a reputation for being a job for professionals only. In reality, many everyday plumbing tasks are well within reach once you have been shown the right technique and have practised with real tools. If you live in or around Withernsea, Hornsea, Hull, Beverley or Bridlington, a short hands-on course can take you from guesswork to confidence.

1. Replacing a tap

A dripping or tired tap is one of the most common household jobs. The key skills are isolating the water supply, disconnecting the old tap without damaging the pipework, and making a watertight connection to the new one.

2. Fitting a new toilet or cistern

Understanding how a cistern fills and flushes makes both fitting and fault-finding far easier. You learn how to connect the supply, set the fill valve and check for leaks before you walk away.

3. Connecting a basin and waste

Getting the waste pipe at the right fall, with a proper trap, stops slow drains and smells. This is a skill that is much easier to learn in person than from a video.

4. Isolating and draining water safely

Knowing where your stopcock and isolation valves are, and how to shut the water off and drain down, can save a great deal of damage in an emergency. It is the first thing we cover.

5. Making a leak-free joint

Whether you are working with compression fittings or push-fit connectors, a good joint comes down to preparation, alignment and testing. We practise on real pipework so you can feel the difference between a good joint and a poor one.

Know your limits

Learning plumbing also teaches you when to call a professional. Gas work, for example, must always be left to a registered engineer. Part of our training is helping you recognise those boundaries.
